Lake Chala day trip
The secret treasure of Tanzania
The peace and quiet of Lake Chala seem a thousand miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Moshi, but it’s actually only an hour’s drive away, so perfect for a day trip. Lake Chala is a crater lake fed by the clean, cold underground streams that flow from Kilimanjaro and is known for its wonderfully changing colors. From deep turquoise to emerald green to azure and all colors in between. It is a perfect place to relax and unwind, and you have the choice between a hike through the picturesque landscape around the lake, a dip in its sparkling waters (do not forget your bathing suit!) Or kayaking across the border into Kenya. Or all three! It’s a day full of personal closeness to one of Tanzania’s biggest (and quietest) treasures.

Your tour guide will pick you up with your delicious packed lunch at your accommodation and start the trip to Lake Chala Safari Camp. On the way, you will drive through the everyday life of Moshi up to the Dar-Arusha Highway, spend a relaxing, comfortable hour and visit the sights along the roadside.
Lake Chala Safari Camp is a beautiful private game reserve overlooking Lake Chala. You will arrive there and your guide will take you through the lush green flora to the lakeshore. It gets quite rocky near the lake, so please wear sturdy shoes. It is a stunning area, ideal for hikers and birdwatchers, and in season you can be lucky enough to see elephants gathering at a remote waterhole. Spend the day on the trails around the lake or through the nearby savannah, where you’ll likely see baboons and meerkats, and (maybe) the shy dik-dik and the graceful kudu.
After your walk, you can sit on the shores of the lake and enjoy the silence, disturbed only by birdsong and the gently babbling water.
If you feel a little more active, you can jump in a kayak and explore the lake. You will be accompanied by the ubiquitous birdsong and the gentle lapping of the water while rowing.
After your adventures, you can enjoy a drink above the lake and, if you are a little hungry, an afternoon snack (at your own expense). If you have not decided to camp by the lake (think of campfires under the stars), you will be driven back to Moshi in the late afternoon. The enjoyable ride gives you some time for yourself to think about your day and wonder if it would be rude to go to bed immediately when you return – you will not believe how tired you are after a restful day, with stress-relieving peace, feel.
